Shanghai Fengxian Library was built in August 1958 with an area of 200 m2 at that time, and it was first open to public in January 1959. At that time there were 2000 books and 2 staff in the library. In April 1976, the library became independent. In August 1982, the new library with an area of 1218 m2 finished construction in Jiefang Road, Nanqiao Town. In January 1993, the 400 m2 newly-built library for young children was applied to use. In February 1997, computer management was realized, and since December that year, the library began to open every day. The library was named the first class library by Ministry of Culture in 1998.

To the end of 2002, there are 265886 books in the library; 8598 valid library cards have been issued. Every year there are 378182 readers come; 718872 books are in circulation, and 285520 books are lent. The library now covers are area of 2552 m2 (in which Xidu branch and Fengcheng Branch are 800m2 ). There are 27 staff, 2 deputy researches, 7 librarians and 10 assistant librarians.
