Towns of unique features drive Fengxian economy

Aug 21, 2017

A scattering of small towns with a special feature or industry, such as farming, tourism, finance and cosmetics manufacturing have emerged across Fengxian.

The so-called Finance Town, covering 7.69 square kilometers of land, has attracted more than 5,000 financial institutions with assets totaling over 100 billion yuan (US$15 billion). The town is part of Shanghai's drive to become an international financial center.

Zhuanghang Town is taking advantage of its rich heritages and folk traditions to develop agritourism. Visitors can see traditional cloth dyeing workshops, taste mutton dishes, and learn to make qingtuan, glutinous rice balls mixed with green grass juice and stuffed with sweet red bean paste.

Nanqiao Town with a history of more than 600 years has restored old houses on riverside and built more public spaces for recreational activities. The Oriental Beauty Valley, an industrial park for cosmetics companies, combines R&D, manufacturing, marketing and logistics in development.

Zhelin Town, where archaeologists uncovered 4,000-year-old ruins of the Liangzhu Culture, is improving the environment and restoring the ecosystem to make it a better place for living.

By contrast, Haiwan Town is promoting itself as a seaside resort for international marathon, equestrian sports, auto racing and other sports activities.
